I’ve been juicing and whirring smoothies in my Sunkist juicer and Waring blender (it has two speeds, “lo” and “hi”–quaint!), both now vintage, for ages. Within the past three years, I’ve been giving all of them a baking twist–transporting flavors reminiscent of my favorite baked goods into all kinds of drinkable treats, all in good, delicious fun. The idea of liquid apple pie became, with cinnamon and nutmeg (and chunks of fruit), apple pie juice; vanilla pound cake turned into essence-of-vanilla smoothie; gingerbread was converted into a ginger-molasses-buttermilk power drink. A old-fashioned-to-modern favorite of mine is a “coconut cake” smoothie, inspired by the confection which has a permanent place in my repertoire.
